How to do a SASSA status check appeal online

An appeal goes to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals (ITSAA), which is part of the Department of Social Development, not SASSA. You still check the result on the SRD website, because that’s where you lodged it.

  1. Type srd.sassa.gov.za into your browser and open the appeals section.
  2. Enter your 13-digit ID number.
  3. Enter the cellphone number you used when you applied and lodged the appeal.
  4. Ask for a PIN. Type in the one-time PIN that SASSA sends you by SMS.
  5. Look at each month you appealed. Every month has its own result.

These steps match what GroundUp describes. Screen wording on the official site can change slightly. If you changed your cellphone number since you appealed, update your contact details first, then do the SASSA status check appeal again.

What your appeal status means

Appeal statusWhat it meansWhat to do next
PendingThe tribunal hasn’t decided yet.Wait and check again every week or two. Don’t lodge the same month twice.
ApprovedThe tribunal agreed the decline was wrong. SASSA must pay you for that month.Check your main SRD status for a pay date, and keep your bank details correct.
DeclinedThe tribunal agreed with SASSA. The original decision stands. This is the final step at the tribunal. See your options below.
No appeal showingNo appeal was found for those details.Check you used the same ID and phone number. If you never appealed, lodge one before the 90 days run out.

The three main outcomes are also explained by GroundUp. After the tribunal decides, SASSA updates your main SRD status, so you may see the change there a little later.

How long does an SRD appeal take?

Most appeals are decided within 60 to 90 days of being lodged (GroundUp). The tribunal has worked to its 90-day target for social assistance appeals for years, but busy periods can push it past that. Each month is decided separately, so one month can be approved while another is still pending.

  • First days: the appeal is logged, and you can see it as pending.
  • Weeks 2 to 12: the tribunal re-checks your details against the same databases SASSA uses, such as Home Affairs, banks, SARS, UIF and NSFAS.
  • Decision: the month changes to approved or declined.
  • After approval: SASSA schedules payment and a pay date appears on your main status.

If your SASSA status check appeal still shows pending after three months, call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and ask them to look into it. Have your ID number ready.

Your chances: what the numbers say

Very few SRD appeals succeed. According to a written reply to Parliament dated 1 July 2025, 1,779,958 appeals were sent to the tribunal. Only 11,535 were upheld, while 1,768,423 were dismissed. That’s fewer than 1 in 100.

Appeals lodgedUpheld (approved)Dismissed (declined)
1,779,95811,535 (about 0.6%)1,768,423 (about 99.4%)

Most appeals fail because the tribunal checks the same records SASSA used. If those records still show a deposit, a UIF payment or NSFAS funding, the decline stands. An appeal is most likely to work when the records SASSA used were wrong, for example:

  • A deposit that wasn’t income, such as money you were holding for someone or a refund.
  • A UIF or NSFAS record that has ended or was never yours.
  • An identity mismatch that you’ve since fixed with Home Affairs.
  • A month when your circumstances changed and the record was out of date.

If your reason is one of these, keep proof such as bank statements or a letter, because SASSA or the tribunal may ask for it.

Which declines are worth appealing?

Before you do a SASSA status check appeal, look at the reason SASSA gave for each declined month. Some reasons are often a records mistake. Others almost never change on appeal.

Decline reasonWorth appealing? What helps your case
Alternative income source identifiedSometimesBank statements showing the deposit wasn’t income, such as money held for someone else or a once-off refund.
Identity verification failedYes, once fixedCorrect your details with Home Affairs or complete the SASSA face check, then appeal.
UIF registeredSometimesProof that your UIF claim ended or that the record isn’t yours.
NSFAS registeredSometimesProof that you’re no longer funded by NSFAS for that period.
Existing SASSA grantRarelyOnly if the grant isn’t in your name. A child support grant paid for your child doesn’t count against you.
Age outside 18 to 59NoOver 60s can apply for the Older Persons Grant instead.

Decline reasons can be worded differently on your screen. Our homepage explains what each SRD status means.

What happens after an approved appeal?

An approved appeal means you’re paid for the month you appealed. SASSA arranges the payment after it gets the tribunal’s decision, and a pay date then shows on your main SRD status. A successful appeal is paid from the month in question, not from the date of the decision (LegalFundi).

  • Keep your banking details and cellphone number up to date, or the payment can fail. See how to change your details.
  • Check your main SRD status for the pay date. Our SASSA status check guide shows every way to check.
  • If the pay date passes with no money, check that your bank account is in your own name and still open.

What if your appeal is declined?

A declined appeal is the tribunal’s final decision for that month. You can’t lodge the same month again. What you can do:

  • Get free advice. The Black Sash gives free paralegal help with SRD problems. Its helplines are 072 66 33 73, 072 633 3739 and 063 610 1865 (GroundUp).
  • Ask about a court review. If you believe the tribunal got it wrong, you can apply to the High Court for a judicial review (GroundUp). Speak to a legal aid office first.
  • Keep going for future months. SASSA tests you again every month, so a declined month doesn’t stop you being approved later if your situation changes.
  • Watch the court case. Government is appealing a High Court ruling that found the SRD system unfairly excludes people who should qualify. The outcome could change how income is tested (Sowetan, August 2026).

Appeal deadlines you shouldn’t miss

  • You must appeal each declined month separately.
  • Appeal within 90 days of the decline. Appealing within 30 days is safest, because you have time to fix problems.
  • Older guides from GroundUp explain the same 30-day and 90-day rule.
  • An appeal costs nothing, and nobody can speed it up for a fee.

Problems checking your appeal status

The PIN doesn’t arrive

Check that you typed the cellphone number you used for the appeal, and that you have signal. Wait a few minutes before asking again, because only the latest PIN works. If you’ve lost that number, update your contact details on the official site first.

I changed my cellphone number after appealing

The appeals page uses the number linked to your application. Update your number on the SRD site, wait for the change to go through, and then do the SASSA status check appeal again. See how to change your cellphone number.

It says no appeal was found

You may have used a different ID or phone number, or the appeal didn’t go through. If you’re still within 90 days of the decline, lodge the appeal again. If you’re past 90 days, you can’t appeal that month.

My appeal was approved but there’s no money

Payment comes after SASSA receives the decision, so it can take a few weeks. Check your main SRD status for a pay date, and make sure your bank details are correct and in your own name.

The decline reason was identity verification

Fix any mistakes with Home Affairs first. SASSA also uses a face check (eKYC) to confirm who you are. If you get an SMS link, complete it in good light with your ID. If it keeps failing, visit a SASSA office.

The website won’t load

The site is busiest around pay dates. Try early in the morning or late at night, or use a different browser. Only use srd.sassa.gov.za.

Stay safe

  • A SASSA status check appeal is free, and so is lodging an appeal. Anyone who asks for money to “approve” or “fast-track” your appeal is a scammer.
  • Never post your ID number and phone number in a Facebook or WhatsApp group so someone can check your appeal for you.
  • SASSA and the tribunal won’t ask for your bank PIN or OTP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check my SASSA appeal status?

Go to the appeals section of srd.sassa.gov.za, enter your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with, and type in the PIN sent by SMS. Each month you appealed shows its own result.

How long does the SASSA status check appeal take to show a result?

Usually 60 to 90 days after you lodge the appeal. It can take longer when the tribunal is busy.

What does pending mean on my appeal?

The tribunal hasn’t decided yet. Keep checking, and don’t lodge the same month again.

Will I get back pay if my appeal is approved?

Yes. You’re paid for the month you appealed, once SASSA processes the decision. Watch your main SRD status for the pay date.

Can I appeal again if my appeal is declined?

No, not for the same month. The tribunal’s decision is final, but you can ask a legal aid office about a High Court review.
