Yes, you can check your SRD R370 status without data using MoyaApp, the app many people call “uMoya”. On MTN, Vodacom, Cell C or Telkom, it opens the official SASSA SRD status page without using your airtime or data bundle. You enter your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with, and you see the same result as on srd.sassa.gov.za. Moya is a private app, not a SASSA app, so it only shows you SASSA’s page. It doesn’t change your application.

uMoya SASSA status check: step by step
The uMoya SASSA status check takes about two minutes once the app is set up. These steps follow the Android version, which is the one most people use:
- Open the Google Play Store and search for MoyaApp. Check that the developer is Moya App (Pty) Ltd before you tap Install.
- Open the app and register with your South African cellphone number. Moya sends you a code by SMS to confirm it.
- Switch your mobile data on. You don’t need a bundle or airtime, but data-free routing only works when mobile data is switched on.
- Tap the Discover tab at the bottom of the screen. This is where Moya keeps its free services.
- Find the SASSA tile. If you can’t see it, use the search bar in Discover and type “SASSA”.
- Choose the SRD status check option. The official SASSA page opens inside Moya.
- Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied, then submit.
- Read your result month by month. Approved months show a pay date once one is set.
Moya changes the look of its menus from time to time, so the tile name may be slightly different on your phone. What matters is that the page that opens is SASSA’s own SRD page and asks only for your ID number and phone number.
Is Moya really free?
Moya works through something called reverse billing. Instead of the data coming off your bundle, the cost is paid by Datafree and the businesses that use its platform. Datafree has reverse-billing deals with South Africa’s main networks. Source: Connecting Africa, 2022.
- Free: opening the SASSA page, chatting by text and sending short voice notes, on MTN, Vodacom, Cell C and Telkom.
- Not free: voice and video calls use normal data, and Moya warns you before they start.
- South Africa only: the data-free part works on South African SIM cards inside the country.
- Wi-Fi works too: if you are on Wi-Fi, the app simply uses the Wi-Fi connection.
These details come from Moya’s own Google Play listing, which in October 2026 showed more than 10 million downloads.
Is Moya safe, and is it official?
Moya is not an official SASSA app. In 2021, when the R350 grant was busy, SASSA warned that Moya was not an authorised channel for applying or following up. The company replied that it never claimed to be a SASSA app and only connects people to the official SRD website without data costs. Its CEO, Gour Lentell, said it does not collect data about users’ applications. Source: TimesLIVE, August 2021.
Today Moya’s app listing says the same: it is independent, not linked to SASSA or any government body, and it does not submit applications. So the safe way to think about it is this: Moya is a free doorway, and the room you walk into is SASSA’s website. Keep it safe by:
- Downloading Moya only from the Google Play Store, never from an APK file shared on WhatsApp.
- Checking that the page asking for your details shows the SRD website and asks only for your ID number and cellphone number.
- Never typing your bank PIN, card number or OTP into anything opened from a chat message.
- Ignoring Moya chats or groups from people offering to “check your status” for you or speed up payment for a fee.
What you can and can’t do through Moya
| Task | In Moya? | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Check your SRD status | Yes | Same result as srd.sassa.gov.za |
| See your pay date | Yes | Shown next to each approved month |
| Apply for the SRD grant | Through the SASSA page | You are still applying on SASSA’s site, not with Moya |
| Change your phone number | Use the SRD website | See our number change guide |
| Update banking details | Use the SRD website | See our banking details guide |
| Lodge an appeal | Not confirmed as data-free | Appeals use a separate site. See our appeal guide |
| Receive your money | No | SASSA pays into your bank, Postbank or Cash Send |
What your Moya result means
Because Moya opens SASSA’s page, a uMoya SASSA status check gives you SASSA’s own results. The usual ones are:
- Approved: you qualify for that month. A pay date appears when SASSA has scheduled the payment. See the SRD payment dates for how the monthly window works.
- Pending: SASSA is still checking that month. Check again in a few days.
- Declined: you didn’t qualify for that month, with a reason shown. You can appeal a declined month and later follow it with an appeal status check.
- Bank details pending: SASSA needs your payment details or is still verifying them.
Our SRD status check guide explains every result in more detail, including what to do when a month stays pending for weeks.
uMoya SASSA status check not working? Try this
- “No data” error: make sure mobile data is switched on. Data-free routing doesn’t work with mobile data off, even if you have no bundle.
- Page won’t load: the SRD website gets very busy around pay days. Close Moya and try again early in the morning.
- No SASSA tile: update Moya in the Play Store, then search “SASSA” inside Discover.
- Details not recognised: use the exact cellphone number you applied with. If that number is gone, change your SRD number first.
- Old app version: if your phone’s Android is very old, the app may stop updating. In that case, use one of the other options below.
If the uMoya SASSA status check still fails after these steps, try the official website directly when you have Wi-Fi. If the website also can’t find your application, the problem is with your details, not with Moya.
Other ways to check your SRD status without data
- Free Wi-Fi: many libraries, municipal buildings and shopping centres have free Wi-Fi. Use srd.sassa.gov.za directly.
- SASSA call centre: call 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number. Lines are busy at month-end, so call early.
- SASSA office: staff can look up your SRD application if you bring your ID.
- WhatsApp and USSD: some websites list SASSA WhatsApp or USSD codes. We couldn’t confirm these on an official SASSA page, so we don’t list them here.
