SASSA toll-free number: 0800 60 10 11

The SASSA toll-free number, 0800 60 10 11, is the line for almost everything: SRD status questions, payment problems, reporting a hijacked number, and grant fraud. SASSA notes that the call is only free from a landline, and calls from a cellphone may be charged.

  • When to call: weekdays during office hours. Early morning and the middle of the month are usually quieter than pay days and month-end.
  • If it’s busy: hang up and try again later rather than holding for a long time on a cellphone.
  • Write it down: note the date, time, the name of the agent and any reference number you’re given.

SASSA email addresses

For general grant questions, email GrantsEnquiries@sassa.gov.za. Each province also has its own enquiries address, listed in the regional table below. Put your full name and the type of grant in the subject line, and explain the problem in a few short sentences in the message.

Never send your bank PIN, card number or OTP by email. SASSA doesn’t need them, and nobody legitimate will ask for them.

SASSA regional offices and contact numbers

These SASSA contact details for each province are listed on the SASSA Services Portal. For most SRD questions the toll-free line is quicker, but the regional office can help with problems in your province.

What to have ready before you contact SASSA

  • Your 13-digit ID number.
  • The cellphone number you used on your SRD application.
  • The month or months you’re asking about.
  • Any reference number from earlier calls or emails.
  • A screenshot of your status, if the question is about a decline or a missing payment.

Having this ready makes a short call much more likely to fix the problem. Our SRD status meanings guide helps you describe exactly what your status says.

Complaints, fraud and escalation

  • Fraud or a stolen grant: report it on SASSA’s grants and fraud hotline, 0800 60 10 11, and open a case at your police station.
  • No response after several attempts: email your regional office with your ID number, the dates you contacted SASSA and any reference numbers.
  • Still stuck: the Presidential Hotline, 17737, takes complaints about government services.
  • Free advice: Black Sash runs a helpline on 072 663 3739 for people with grant problems.

SASSA never charges for its services and never asks for your PIN, OTP or online banking password. Anyone who does is not from SASSA. For the official websites, see our list of SASSA websites and portals.
