Your SRD status is SASSA’s decision for one month at a time. Approved means you qualify for that month and will be paid once a pay date appears. Pending means SASSA is still checking that month. Declined means you didn’t qualify for that month, and the reason is shown next to it. You can appeal a declined month within 90 days. Each new month is checked again, so one month can be declined and the next approved. That is the short way to read an SRD R350 status check if approved, pending or declined.

Every SRD status in one table
Here is how to read an SRD R350 status check if approved, pending or declined, plus the less common messages. The grant has been R370 since 2024, but many people still call it the R350, and the status page works the same way.
| Status you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Approved | You qualify for that month | Wait for the pay date to appear, then check your account |
| Approved, no pay date yet | Payment for that month is not scheduled yet | Check again later in the month and make sure your bank details are right |
| Pending | SASSA is still checking that month | Wait. Don’t apply again |
| Declined (with a reason) | You didn’t pass a check for that month | Read the reason. Appeal within 90 days if you think it’s wrong |
| Bank details pending | SASSA needs or is verifying your payment details | Add or correct your details on the SRD website |
| Referred | Your application was sent for extra checks, often fraud or identity checks | Wait, and go to a SASSA office if asked |
| Cancelled | The application was stopped, by you or by SASSA | Contact SASSA to find out why |
| Reapplication pending | An older message for applications that had to be resubmitted | Check that your application is still active on the SRD site |
The exact wording on the SRD website changes from time to time. If you see a message that isn’t in the table, the rule of thumb is the same: read the month it applies to, then the reason.
What “approved” means
An SRD R350 status check if approved shows the word Approved next to a month. It means you passed all of SASSA’s checks for that month: identity, income, and the other grant and payroll databases. It does not mean the money has been paid yet.
- Approved with a pay date: the payment has been scheduled. Money usually reaches a bank account within a few working days of that date.
- Approved without a pay date: SASSA hasn’t scheduled the payment yet. SRD pay dates come out on a rolling basis, usually in the second half of the month. See our SRD payment dates guide. If it stays that way, follow our approved but no pay date guide.
- Approved, but the pay date has passed and nothing arrived: the most common cause is banking details. SASSA has said payments can fail because the details are wrong, are still being verified, or the bank sent the money back (TimesLIVE, September 2025). Our banking details guide shows how to fix it.
An SRD R350 status check if approved for one month says nothing about next month. SASSA checks you again each month, so keep looking at every month separately.
What “pending” means
Pending means SASSA hasn’t finished checking that month yet. It is not a rejection. SASSA has told Parliament that applications are not rejected when they are submitted: only your identity is checked at that point, and the income and database checks run monthly after that (PMG, question NW3195, July 2026).
- A new month often shows pending at the start of the month and changes later.
- Don’t submit a new application while you are pending. A second application can cause a duplicate flag and slow things down.
- Don’t change your phone number or bank details unless they are actually wrong. Changes can start fresh checks.
- If one month stays pending for many weeks while later months are decided, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask about that month by name.
What “declined” means, reason by reason
If an SRD R350 status check if approved last month now shows declined, the reason next to the month tells you why. A declined month always comes with a reason. These are the reasons people see most often, in plain language:
| Reason shown | What it usually means | How to respond |
|---|---|---|
| Alternative income source identified | Money coming into a bank account linked to your ID went over the R624 limit that month | If it was a once-off gift or someone else’s money, appeal with bank statements |
| UIF registered | UIF records show you as working or getting UIF | Get proof from the Department of Employment and Labour that you are not, then appeal |
| NSFAS registered | NSFAS records show you receive student funding | If your funding has ended, appeal with proof |
| Existing SASSA grant | You already receive another SASSA grant in your own name | Caregivers of child grants are not meant to be excluded. Appeal if this is your case |
| Gov payroll registered | Your ID appears on a government payroll | If you have left that job, appeal with proof |
| Identity verification failed | Your details don’t match Home Affairs records | Check your ID details and visit SASSA or Home Affairs. See our identity verification guide |
| Age outside range | You are under 18 or 60 and older | At 60 you can apply for the older person’s grant instead |
The numbers show how common database matches are. As at 1 April 2026, SASSA reported about 263,000 declines linked to UIF and 25,000 linked to NSFAS, out of more than 9.1 million declines for all reasons (PMG, question NW3195).
If you think a decline is wrong, you can appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals within 90 days, on the SRD website. Our SRD appeal guide walks you through it, and the appeal status check page explains the results.
Referred, cancelled, failed and other messages
Not every SRD R350 status check if approved, pending or declined fits the three main results. You may also see one of these:
- Referred: your application was sent for further checks, usually linked to identity or fraud risk, such as a cellphone number shared with other applicants. Wait for SASSA to contact you, and go to an office with your ID if you are asked to.
- Cancelled: the application was stopped. This can happen if you asked to cancel, or if SASSA found a problem. Call SASSA to find out which.
- Bank details pending: SASSA has no verified way to pay you yet. Add or fix your details on the SRD website.
- “Failed” or an error when you check: this is usually not a decision. It often means the website is busy, or the ID number and cellphone number don’t match what SASSA has. Try again later with the exact number you applied with. If that number is gone, change your SRD cellphone number first.
- No application found: SASSA has no SRD application for that ID and number combination. Check both carefully before applying again on the SRD application page.
How SASSA decides your status each month
Every month, SASSA checks your ID number against bank records and other government databases, including UIF, NSFAS, SARS and government payroll data. Whether your next SRD R350 status check if approved or declined depends on these checks. To qualify, the money coming in has to stay under the means test limit of R624 a month (EWN, March 2025).
These rules are being challenged in court. In January 2025, the Pretoria High Court found several SRD regulations unconstitutional, including the R624 threshold, the online-only applications and the way once-off gifts are counted as income (GroundUp, January 2025). The government appealed, and the Supreme Court of Appeal had not ruled by October 2026. Until it does, the old rules still apply.
The grant itself carries on. In the mini-budget on 21 October 2026, the Finance Minister extended the SRD grant for another year beyond March 2027, still at R370 a month. Treasury also said recipients will be checked against more public records to catch duplicate and fraudulent claims (Bizcommunity, 22 October 2026).
Can you cancel or reinstate an SRD grant?
If you no longer need the grant, for example because you found work, it is better to tell SASSA than to keep an application running that could be declined month after month. Our step-by-step guide shows how to cancel your SRD application online, or you can call 0800 60 10 11.
If your application was cancelled and you now qualify again, contact SASSA before submitting a new application, so you don’t end up with two records under one ID. If a cancellation was a mistake, ask the call centre or a SASSA office to reinstate it and write down the reference number they give you.
Tips for reading your status correctly
- Read every month on its own. A decline in May doesn’t cancel an approval in June.
- Check the reason, not just the word. “Declined: UIF registered” needs a different fix from “Declined: Identity verification failed”.
- Use only the official site. Real SASSA addresses end in .gov.za. No data? Our Moya app guide shows a free way to open it.
- Keep a screenshot of each declined month. It helps with an appeal.
- Doing an SRD R350 status check if approved but unpaid more than once a day won’t speed it up. Check every few days instead.
Frequently asked questions
What does an SRD R350 status check show if approved?
It shows “Approved” next to the month you qualified for. A pay date appears once SASSA schedules the payment. Approval is for that month only.
What does pending mean on the SASSA status check?
SASSA is still checking that month. It is not a rejection. Wait and check again in a few days, and don’t apply again.
Why does my SASSA status say declined?
You didn’t pass one of SASSA’s monthly checks, such as the R624 income limit, UIF or NSFAS records, or identity checks. The reason is shown next to the month.
Can I appeal a declined SRD month?
Yes. You can appeal to the Independent Tribunal for Social Assistance Appeals within 90 days, on the SRD website.
Why does my SASSA status check say failed?
Usually the website is busy, or the ID number and cellphone number don’t match SASSA’s records. Try again later with the number you applied with.
What does referred mean on the SRD status?
Your application was sent for further checks, often about identity or fraud risk. SASSA may ask you to visit an office.
Is the SRD grant still available after March 2027?
Yes. In October 2026 the government extended the SRD grant for another year, at R370 a month.
Do I need to reapply every month?
No. One application covers the months you are checked for. SASSA decides each month separately. More in our SRD reapplication guide.
