How to Cancel Your SRD Application

To cancel your SRD application, go to srd.sassa.gov.za, open the Cancel My Application section, enter your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with, type in the one-time PIN SASSA sends you, and confirm. SASSA has told Parliament that a cancellation is permanent, not for one month only, so if you need the grant again later you can reinstate the application or apply again. It is free, and you’ll get an SMS confirming the request.

Should you cancel your SRD application?

The SRD grant is for people with little or no income. If that changes, it’s better to cancel your SRD application yourself than to leave it running. SASSA has said recipients must report changes in their financial circumstances so their eligibility can be reviewed. Good reasons to cancel:

  • You found a job or started earning more than R624 a month.
  • You started getting UIF, an NSFAS allowance or another SASSA grant.
  • You applied by mistake, or someone helped you apply without explaining the rules.
  • You think someone else applied in your name. In that case, call SASSA too, because cancelling alone doesn’t stop identity theft.

You don’t have to cancel just because one month was declined. SASSA checks every month separately, so a declined month can be followed by an approved one.

How to cancel your SRD application online

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za. Type the address yourself.
  2. Scroll down to the Cancel My Application section and tap the button to cancel online.
  3. Enter your 13-digit ID number and the cellphone number you used when you applied.
  4. Tap Send PIN and type in the 6-digit one-time PIN from the SMS.
  5. Choose the option to cancel your grant.
  6. Tap Yes to confirm. Take a screenshot of the confirmation.

SASSA’s own description to Parliament matches this: you log in to the platform you applied on, choose the cancel option and follow the prompts (PMG, question NW2370, July 2023). Button names on the website change from time to time, so look for the word “cancel”.

Other ways to cancel

  • SASSA office: take your ID and ask them to cancel it for you.
  • Call centre: 0800 60 10 11. Ask for a reference number.
  • WhatsApp: some guides say you can send a cancellation request to the official line, 082 046 8553. Use the website if the menu doesn’t offer it. See our SASSA WhatsApp guide.

What happens after you cancel

QuestionAnswer
Does it stop next month?Yes. A cancelled application isn’t assessed or paid for future months
Do I lose money already paid? No. Months already paid aren’t taken back
How long does it take? You get an SMS that the request was sent. Check your status after a few days
Is it only for one month? No. SASSA says cancellation is permanent until you reinstate or apply again
Does it affect other grants? No. It only affects the SRD R370 grant

Cancelling is common. SASSA reported 341,896 cancellations in 2021, 435,432 in 2022 and 211,814 in the first part of 2023, and said many people reinstate later in the same year (PMG, question NW2370).

How to reinstate a cancelled SRD application

If you lose your income again, you don’t have to start from nothing. SASSA has said only people whose circumstances changed, or who lost their income, can reinstate (TimesLIVE, December 2021).

  1. Go to srd.sassa.gov.za and find the option to reinstate a cancelled application, in the same section as cancelling.
  2. Enter your ID number and cellphone number, then request and enter the PIN.
  3. Choose your reason. Options have included “Cancelled in error”, “No longer have income” and “Other”.
  4. Confirm, then check your status in the following weeks.

If reinstating doesn’t work, you can apply again. Our SRD reapplication guide explains when a new application is needed, and the SRD application guide covers each step.

Cancelling vs being declined

These are different things. When you cancel your SRD application, you stop it yourself and it stays stopped. When a month is declined, SASSA decided you didn’t qualify that month, but your application stays active and SASSA checks you again next month. A declined month can be appealed. A cancelled application can only be reinstated or replaced. Our SRD status meanings guide explains the “cancelled” status and the others.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Cancelling after a single decline. Appeal the month instead, or wait for next month’s result. See our SRD appeal guide.
  • Using a “cancel” link from WhatsApp or Facebook. Only use srd.sassa.gov.za.
  • Sharing your OTP. Anyone with it can cancel or change your application.
  • Cancelling instead of reporting fraud. If someone used your ID, call 0800 60 10 11 and see our identity verification guide.
