The official SASSA WhatsApp number is 082 046 8553. Government publications have listed it since the SRD grant began, and SASSA still gave it as a contact line in 2025. To do a SASSA status check on WhatsApp, save the number, send “Hi” or “Status”, and follow the menu with your ID number and the cellphone number you applied with. WhatsApp is fine for quick status questions, but changing bank details, appealing and identity checks are done on the SRD website or at a SASSA office.

The official SASSA WhatsApp number
Many websites list different SASSA WhatsApp numbers, so we went back to government sources. The only WhatsApp number we found in SASSA or government material is 082 046 8553:
| Where it was published | When | What it says |
|---|---|---|
| Vuk’uzenzele (government newspaper) | September 2021 | WhatsApp line 082 046 8553 for SRD applications |
| SASSA media statement on gov.za | May 2022 | “WhatsApp number 082 046 8553 it is active”, for people struggling on the website |
| SAnews | May 2025 | WhatsApp 082 046 8553 listed as a SASSA contact channel |
So the number has stayed the same for years. What changes is the menu behind it, so the options you see may look different from older guides.
How to do a SASSA status check on WhatsApp
- Save 082 046 8553 in your phone’s contacts as “SASSA”. Type it yourself instead of tapping a number someone forwarded to you.
- Open WhatsApp and refresh your contacts so “SASSA” appears.
- Open the chat and send Hi or Status.
- Pick the SRD or status option from the menu that comes back.
- Enter your 13-digit ID number and, if asked, the cellphone number you used when you applied.
- Read the reply. It should show your status or point you to the next step.
A SASSA status check on WhatsApp works best from the phone with the number registered on your application. If you changed numbers, the official records won’t match the new one until you change your SRD cellphone number.

Other “SASSA WhatsApp numbers” you’ll see online
Some websites and social media pages list other numbers, such as 082 601 0111, sometimes with menus for changing your phone number or reconfirming. We could not find any of these in a SASSA statement or government publication, so we don’t recommend them. If a number isn’t 082 046 8553, don’t send it your ID number.
Be especially careful with personal WhatsApp accounts that claim to be “SASSA agents”. The official line is an automated service. A real person messaging you privately and offering to check your status, fix a decline or speed up payment is a scam.
SMS and USSD options
- USSD *134*7737#: the government’s Vuk’uzenzele newspaper listed this code for SRD applications in 2021. Several reports since then say it doesn’t always work, so treat it as a backup only.
- SMS: EWN reported in 2024 that you could send “SASSA” followed by your ID number to 082 046 8553 (EWN, November 2024). WhatsApp is the more reliable way to use that number.
- Free option without data: the Moya app opens the official status page without using your bundle. See our Moya app guide.
SASSA WhatsApp not responding? Try this
- Check that you saved exactly 082 046 8553, with no extra digits.
- Make sure WhatsApp has data or Wi-Fi. Messages with one grey tick haven’t been delivered yet.
- Send a short message like “Hi” once, then wait. Sending your ID number again and again won’t speed it up.
- Avoid month-end and pay days, when the line is busiest. Early morning works best.
- If there’s still no reply, check your status on srd.sassa.gov.za or call 0800 60 10 11.
Scam warning: what SASSA will never ask on WhatsApp
- Your bank PIN, card number, CVV or online banking password.
- Your one-time PIN (OTP) from an SMS.
- Money, airtime or vouchers to “unlock”, “approve” or “speed up” your grant.
- A photo of your ID, your SASSA card or your bank card.
- To forward a message or link to friends so you qualify.
If someone asks for any of these, block the number and report it to SASSA on 0800 60 10 11. If you already shared your OTP or PIN, call your bank straight away.
