SASSA Identity Verification Failed? How to Fix It

“Identity verification failed” means SASSA could not confirm that you are the person on the application. Usually your details don’t match Home Affairs records, or the face scan didn’t pass. To fix it, wait for SASSA’s ID verification link by SMS (or ask the call centre for it), take the selfie in good light, and check your details with Home Affairs. If the face scan keeps failing, take your ID to a SASSA office. Your SRD payments stay on hold until your identity is confirmed.

What “identity verification failed” means

SASSA checks identity in three ways, and a problem with any of them can stop your SRD grant:

  • Home Affairs data: your ID number, name, surname and date of birth must match the population register. A spelling difference, a married surname that was never updated, or a record marked as deceased will fail.
  • Your face: for flagged or high-risk cases, SASSA asks for a live selfie and compares it with your ID photo. This is called eKYC (electronic “know your client”).
  • Your phone and bank: the cellphone number and bank account should be registered in your own name. Numbers shared with other applicants are treated as a fraud risk.

You might see the problem as “Declined: Identity verification failed”, as a month stuck on pending, or as “Referred”. All three can point to the same thing. Our SRD status meanings guide explains the other results.

Who gets the SASSA ID verification link?

The SASSA ID verification link is not sent to everyone. It goes to people SASSA wants to check more closely:

  • People who changed their cellphone number. Since 2024, SASSA has asked for face verification after a number change, as a once-off step to unlock the account (GroundUp via EWN, June 2024).
  • People suspected to be victims of identity theft. SASSA works with banks and the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service to find them.
  • New applicants and contact detail changes from 1 September 2025, when SASSA started biometric checks to fight grant fraud (EWN, August 2025).

The face check must be done by the grant holder in person. In a written reply to Parliament, the department said identity checks cannot be done by someone else on your behalf (PMG, question NW4863).

How to complete the face scan

  1. Open the SMS from SASSA on the phone with your SRD number. Check that the link in it leads to a .gov.za page or to the verification page SASSA names in the message.
  2. Allow the page to use your camera when asked.
  3. Hold the phone at eye level, facing a window or bright light. Avoid light coming from behind you.
  4. Take off your hat, cap and glasses. Keep hair and hands away from your face.
  5. Follow the on-screen movements, such as blinking or turning your head. This proves the picture is live.
  6. Wait for the message telling you whether verification succeeded. Take a screenshot.

If the SASSA ID verification link online page won’t open, try a different browser, check that mobile data or Wi-Fi is on, and make sure your phone’s camera works in other apps. Don’t keep retrying for hours. After two or three failed attempts, go to a SASSA office.

The green ID book problem is real. SASSA told GroundUp that green ID books have poorer-quality photos and a higher chance of failing the face check. Spokesperson Paseka Letsatsi said that if the test fails, people “will need to get a new ID which includes advanced biometric features” (GroundUp via EWN, June 2024).

  • Check the number. The SASSA ID verification link only goes to the cellphone number on your application. If you lost that number, change your SRD cellphone number first.
  • Ask for it. Call 0800 60 10 11 and ask SASSA to send the identity verification link. Write down the date and the name of the person you spoke to.
  • Give it a few days. People have reported waiting days for the SMS. If nothing comes after a week, call again or go to an office.
  • Check your SMS inbox. Some phones file messages from unknown senders in a separate folder.

Someone used my ID to apply for the SRD grant

SRD fraud has often used stolen ID numbers with bank accounts and SIM cards opened in other people’s names. SASSA says it flags suspected cases and asks the real person to confirm their identity with biometrics (GroundUp via EWN, December 2024). If you think your ID was used:

  1. Call SASSA on 0800 60 10 11 and report it. Ask for a reference number.
  2. Go to a SASSA office with your original ID so they can confirm who you are.
  3. Open a case at your nearest police station and keep the case number.
  4. Ask the Southern African Fraud Prevention Service (SAFPS) for protective registration, a free service that warns lenders and banks that your ID may be misused.
  5. If SASSA doesn’t respond, Black Sash runs a helpline on 072 663 3739.

What happens to your payments

Until your identity is confirmed, SRD payments stay on hold. Letsatsi said of people who don’t complete verification: “Their grants will remain suspended.” Once verification succeeds, check each month on your status. If a month was declined because of identity verification, you can appeal that month within 90 days. Approved months then follow the normal SRD payment dates.

If your bank account was also flagged, update it after your identity is sorted out. Our guide to SRD banking details shows how.

Scammers know people are waiting for a SASSA ID verification link, so they send fake ones. Be careful:

  • Real SASSA links never ask for your bank PIN, card number or online banking password.
  • Don’t use a “SASSA ID verification link online” shared in a Facebook group or WhatsApp chat. SASSA sends it to you personally.
  • Nobody can sell you a verification link or “fast-track” your verification.
  • Check the address bar. Official SASSA websites end in .gov.za. Our list of official SASSA websites shows which ones are real.

Frequently asked questions

What does identity verification failed mean on SASSA?

SASSA could not confirm your identity. Usually your details don’t match Home Affairs records, or the face scan didn’t pass. Payments stay on hold until it is fixed.

How do I get the SASSA ID verification link?

SASSA sends it by SMS to the cellphone number on your SRD application when verification is needed. You can call 0800 60 10 11 to ask for it.

Can I do the SASSA face scan without a smartphone?

You need a phone with a camera and internet to use the link. Without one, go to a SASSA office and ask for help with verification in person.

Why does my face scan keep failing?

Poor light, glasses or a hat, or an old green ID book photo are common causes. After a few failed attempts, take your ID to a SASSA office.

Do I need a smart ID for SASSA verification?

Not always, but SASSA has said people with green ID books are more likely to fail and may need a new smart ID if the face check fails.

Can someone else do my SASSA identity verification?

No. The face check must be done by the grant holder. Anyone offering to do it for you is a risk to your grant.

Will I get my SRD money after verification?

Payments resume once your identity is confirmed and the month is approved. Months declined for identity reasons can be appealed within 90 days.
