Child support grant top-up for orphans

Since 30 May 2022, relatives who care for an orphaned child can get a top-up of 50% on the child support grant. With the child support grant at R580, the top-up is R290, so the total is R870 a month per child. You apply at a SASSA office with certified copies of the parents’ death certificates. If one parent’s certificate can’t be found, bring the other parent’s certificate and an affidavit. No court order or social worker report is needed (Vuk’uzenzele).

Some websites still show a top-up of R280. That was 50% of the old R560 grant, so it’s out of date.

The SRD grant amount: still R370

The SRD grant didn’t go up in 2026. It has been R370 a month since April 2024, and in October 2026 the government extended it for another year beyond March 2027 at the same amount. A court case about the SRD income limit and grant value is still waiting for a Supreme Court of Appeal ruling. Our SRD status meanings guide explains how SASSA decides each month, and the SRD payment dates page shows when it’s paid.

Means test limits for 2026

Most grants are means-tested: SASSA checks your income and assets (and your spouse’s) against a limit. These are the 2026 limits SASSA explained in May 2026, as reported by the Alberton Record:

GrantMonthly income limit (single / married)Asset limit (single / married)
Older person’s, disability, war veteransR9,350 / R18,700R1,584,000 / R3,168,000
Child support grant (caregiver)R5,800 / R11,600No asset test
SRD grantR624Checked through bank inflows
Foster child grantNot means-testedNot means-tested

For the older person’s and disability grants, income close to the limit can mean a smaller grant rather than no grant, so it’s worth applying and letting SASSA do the calculation.

When you get paid

  • Older person’s grant: first payment day of the month.
  • Disability grant: the next working day.
  • Children’s grants (child support, foster child, care dependency): the day after that.
  • SRD grant: separate dates later in the month, shown on your status.

See the exact days for each month on our SASSA payment dates page. If you’re paid on the separate “fourth day”, SASSA may have flagged your grant for a review.

How to check your own grant amount

  • Bank or card: the amount paid in on your pay date is your grant.
  • Call SASSA: 0800 60 10 11 with your ID number. See all SASSA contact details.
  • SRD: your status on srd.sassa.gov.za shows each approved month.

If you get less than the SASSA grant amounts listed above, it may be because of the means test, or a deduction such as a funeral policy. SASSA only allows certain deductions, so ask the call centre to explain any amount you don’t recognise.
